今回紹介するのは、ロンドンのパーディー・ヒックス美術館で開催中の『Destinerrance』。イギリスを拠点にする新進気鋭のポルトガル人写真家エドガー・マーティンス（Edgar Martins、1977-）の写真作品が展示されている。
同展のテーマにもなっている“Destinerrance”は、フランスの哲学者ジャック・デリダが考案した概念で、誤りがもたらす物事の方向性や運命のこと。「すべての書簡や手紙は、間違って解釈されたり、誤った宛先に送られる可能性がある」（デリダ）。この考えを下敷きに“手紙”を探求、遺書や囚人間で交わされた手紙、辛辣なメッセージが書かれているポストイットなどをモチーフに、手紙のコミュニケーション、ドキュメントとしての役割を表現する、独特な写真展だ。
