オーストラリアはシドニーにある、ニュー・サウス・ウェールズ州立美術館。ビクトリア国立美術館に続きオーストラリアで２番目の大きさを誇る同館で、先週の日曜まで開催されていたのが『Margel Hinder: Modern in Motion』。オーストラリア系アメリカ人のモダニズム彫刻家マーゲル・ヒンダー（1906-1995）が、生前の50年以上のキャリアのなかで制作したダイナミックなモダニズム彫刻作品の数々が展示されている。
「ヒンダーはオーストラリアの抽象芸術家の第一世代です。同展では、シドニーにおけるモダニズムの動きにおいて、彼女がいかに重要な存在であったかを明らかにします」。ヒンダーは、オーストラリアのモダニズム彫刻文化に大きく貢献したにもかかわらず、これまであまり評価されることはなかった。同展はそんな彼女の初となる回顧展となっている。
1930年代には木彫作品を中心に制作していたが、50年代初頭にはワイヤーを用いた宇宙的な彫刻作品に移行。ワイヤー彫刻作品はどれも形、空間、光、動きを探求する抽象的なデザインが特徴だ。57年に制作されたワイヤーとプラスチックを用いた彫刻作品『Revolving construction 1957』。ダイナミックな曲線を描き、縦横無尽に飛び回るワイヤーが躍動的だ。細く尖った無数の金属が印象的な『Metal construction 1957』は、金属と木を用いた彫刻作品で、同年に発表された。オーストラリアのフォトジャーナリスト、故デイビット・ムーアによって撮影された写真『Margel Hinder working on her sculpture for the Western Assurance Company c1973』では、ヒンダーが制作に没頭する様子がうかがえる。
生前は陽の目を見ず、死後にその価値が再発見される芸術家というのは少なくない。ヒンダーも例に漏れず。30年以上のときを経て、いま20世紀のモダニズム彫刻シーンに掘られ刻まれた“忘れられた”彫刻家の跡をもう一度。
