今回紹介するのは、ニューヨーク近代美術館で開催中の「Bodys Isek Kingelez: City Dreams」。コンゴ民主共和国出身のアーティスト、ボディス・イセク・キンゲレス（1948-2015）が遺した都市模型を展示している。
「高層ビルのない街は死んでいる。存在していない街だ」。自身を〈デザイナーであり、建築家であり、彫刻家であり、エンジニアであり、アーティスト〉と表現したキンゲレスは、「医者や警察がいらない平和な理想都市・ユートピア」をつくった。「都市模型のない国は、生きている国ではない」。故郷のキンシャサ（コンゴの首都）やアフリカの未来の都市を描くとともに、都市の発展や経済的不平等、コミュニティや社会の機能性などを追求した。紙やダンボール、パッケージ、プラスチック、カン、ビン、金属くずなどのリサイクル材料で模型をつくるあたりに、都市のリサイクル、循環を思い描いたキンゲレスの想いを感ぜずにはいられない。
