「男性であること」をテーマにしたグループ展『Masculinities: Liberation through Photography』が、ロンドンにあるヨーロッパ最大の文化施設バービカン・センターで開催中だ。1960年代から現在まで、「男性であること」がどのように表現され社会的に構築されてきたのかを、写真や映像を通して探求する。
展覧会では「クィアのアイデンティティ」、「黒人の体」、「権力と家父長制」、「女性の視点から見る男性」、「強い男性のステレオタイプ」、「父としての家族との関係性」の6つに分類し、世界各国から50人を超える先駆者的アーティスト、写真家、映像作家による300以上の作品を展示(なかには英国での展示経験のない、若い無名アーティストらも)。
60年代から日本の写真界にて第一線で活躍した写真家、深瀬昌久が生前に手がけた作品『家族』では、父親を中心に家族の生死を記録。死後に米国で最も偉大な写真家の1人として認められたピーター・フジャーの作品『David Brintzenhofe Applying Makeup(1987年)』では、男性が化粧を施す様子を捉える。写真家であり大学教授も務めるキャサリン・オーピエのシリーズ『Being and Having』では、西海岸のLGBTQコミュニティに属する友人らに偽の口ひげをつけたりスポーツのユニフォームを着せたりして、“男性的”な一面を切り取る。
60年代のゲイ解放運動、70年代の男女格差問題、80年代初頭のエイズの流行など。同展覧会では時代や社会的背景による「男性らしさ」の変化を見ることができる。残念ながら現在は新型コロナウイルス感染対策のため一時閉館中。再開の目処はたっていないため、ヒープスのウェブ上で各人各様な「男性らしさ」のあり方をたのしんでほしい。
