ロンドンの中心部・ケンジントンに位置する、約400万点のコレクションを保持する世界最大級の国立博物館、ヴィクトリア＆アルバート（V&A）博物館。スコットランドにある別館が建築家・隈研吾によって設計されていることでも知られている。今回紹介するのは、ロンドンの本館で現在開催中の展示『Epic Iran』。古代の彫刻から現代の写真作品まで、5,000年の月日とともに発展したイランの芸術、デザイン、文化の変遷を、写本や陶器、カーペット、テキスタイル、写真などの300もの展示品から探る。
本展は「ペルシア帝国」「信仰の変化」「読み書きの卓越さ」など10のセクションから成る。「ペルシア帝国」のセクションには王権や王族の権力や貿易の繁栄を表すアイテムが豊富に並ぶ。V&Aのコレクションでもある『金の腕輪』はこの時代の作品。その後ペルシア帝国が滅びたササン朝の時代にはゾロアスター教が国教となり、芸術と建築の伝統が大いに発展した。「信仰の変化」のセクションでは、紀元後７世紀半ばにアラビア人により征服されたあとの、千年紀のイラン文化におけるイスラム教の位置づけを探求する。イスカランダル国王の誕生日を記念して作成された15世紀のホロスコープ『Horoscope of Iskandar Sultan』も、芸術として美しい。
「近現代のイラン」では、1940年代から現代に至るまでのイランの社会的・政治的変化を取り上げる。1979年のイラン革命とイラン・イラク戦争により終焉を迎えてしまったモダニズム芸術が紹介されている。イランの現代アーティストの巨匠Sirak Melkonianの『Veiled Woman, 1957』は、ベールをしっかりと被り、バスハウス（公共浴場）から出てくる女性を描いたもの。イランの日常風景が現代アートで塗られている。
過去の伝統から影響を受ける作品から、近代テクノロジーを駆使した作品まで過激で実験的な表現も含めているのが本展のおもしろさ。現代ビジュアルアーティストShirin Aliabadiによる『Miss Hybrid #3, 2008』は、風船ガムを膨らます女性のポートレート写真。女性の自己表現がよろこばれないイランでは挑戦的な作品であるといえる。「ジェンダーや政治、宗教、アイデンティティの問題はユーモアと皮肉をもって表現され、検閲と監視の目に挑みました」。開催は9月12日まで。
