英国人アーティスト、アントニー・ゴームリー。 自分自身の身体を鋳型にとり、それを元にしたインスタレーションや彫刻、大型のパブリック・アートで知られる。今回彼が展示会場として選んだのは、エーゲ海に浮かぶギリシャの島、デロス島。無数の古代遺跡で埋め尽くされている“島全体が世界遺産”という稀有な無人島である。世界遺産の島の古代遺跡と、ゴームリーの現代美術。両者が不思議な波長を生み出す『SIGHT | ANTONY GORMLEY ON THE ISLAND OF DELOS』が今回紹介する展覧会だ。
約20年間にわたりアントニーが作り出してきた29体の人体彫刻は、古代劇場から商業施設、美術館など島内のさまざまな遺跡スポットと混ざり合い、失われてしまった人間の存在を再び取り戻そうとする。かつてデロス島はギリシャの神々の聖地であり、古くからくから海洋貿易の中心地とした栄えた場所。裕福な商人たちが集まる賑々しい場所だった。やがて、略奪などの悲運が続き、紀元前1世紀に島ごと捨てられることとなり、いつしか無人島となってしまう。
神話・宗教・政治など、未だに島の土地に根づいているさまざまな歴史。自然に入り込んだ人体彫刻を媒体に、いま目の前に遺された“歴史”を見つめながら、もうここにはない“歴史”を想像してみてはどうか。今年の10月31日までの開催というので、一味変わった夏・秋の旅のアイデアを探している人は、ぜひ〈古代遺跡×現代アート〉でいかが。
