今回紹介する展覧会はインド出身の現代美術アーティスト、シーラ・ゴウダによるイタリア初となる個展『Remains』。ヨーロッパ最大の現代美術アートセンターともいわれる、ミラノの「ピレリ・ハンガービコッカ」にて開催中だ。1992年から約20年間に渡って制作を続けてきた彼女の作品は、絵画から彫刻、大型インスタレーションなど多岐にわたる。
特にシーラのインスタレーションは、髪の毛、お香、牛糞、天然顔料などインドの儀式にまつわる日常的な素材を使いながら、手作業による制作工程を強調するような作品が多い。90年代から急激に経済的・文化的成長を遂げたインド。失われゆく伝統的な工芸技術と、その裏に隠された労働の役割について、さまざまな残骸たちー「Remains」が訴えかける。
「英語の『Remains』には、二つの意味があります。一つは、もう“過ぎ去った”もの。なにかの残骸。もう一つは、永遠に“残り続ける”もの」
時代に取り残されながらも存在し続けているもの。シーラはその存在し続けるものの中に入り込み、寄り添うことで物質の情念、愛情、そして存在価値を再定義する。技術の発展によって受身的に情報を受け取ることが可能になったこの現代社会において、アートとして再び命を吹き込まれた「Remains」が発する声に能動的に耳を傾けてみてはどうだろうか？
