南カリフォルニアを拠点にするベテラン米国人アーティストのエレノア・アンティン。フェミニストの観点から歴史やアイデンティティについて探るアート作品やパフォーマンスを次々と生み出している。彼女のセルフポートレート作品で代表作の一つ『CARVING: A Traditional Sculpture』を含めた展覧会「Time’s Arrow」が現在、ロサンゼルス・カウンティ博物館（LACMA）で開催されている。
アーティストとしての活動をはじめるまでは、女優として活躍していたこともありアート、パフォーマンス、演劇の境界線を超えた作品づくりのパイオニアとしても知られているエレノア。彼女の作品は、決められた枠組みに囚われまいとする、挑発的な側面を持っていることで知られている。
本展の展示作品にもその側面は健在。セルフポートレート作品『CARVING: A Traditional Sculpture』は1972年、37歳のエレノアが、37日間で約５kg減量し自分の体のヌードを148枚の白黒写真に記録したもの。45年後の2017年、82歳になった彼女は『CARVING: 45 Years Later』で約100日間かけて、同じように自身の体を記録し続けた。
美術館が展覧会作品を「絵画」か「彫刻」に限定していた70年代。エレノアは、その規範に対し、自分の変わりゆくヌードポートレートでもって、“生きる彫刻”という新たな概念を打ち出した。半世紀たった現在、女性の体が持つ意味はどのように変化しているのだろうか？ 規範や脆弱性、そして確実に進みつづける時間。壁を埋め尽くす大量の“体”が時空を超えて静かに訴えかける。
