今回紹介する展覧会は『13,700,000 km3』。ギリシャ・サモス島のアートスペース・ピタゴリオで開催中だ。中東・トルコと肩を並べ、ヨーロッパの一番端に位置するこの島は、現在、地中海地域のさまざまな政治的・社会的状況をわかりやすく反映している場所といっても過言ではないだろう。2011年にはじまったシリア戦争や「アラブの春」を契機として、イラク・アフガニスタン・シリアからヨーロッパへ渡る難民たちの玄関口として知られてきた。いまでも約4,000人の難民たちが他国への亡命希望を出したまま、劣悪な生活状況で足止めされている。
サモサ島を含む地中海地域は、環境・政治・経済などさまざまな変化の真っ只中にあるのは確か。しかしその一方で世界各国から集まった「人種のるつぼ」として、文化的・芸術的な交流が歴史的におこなわれてきたのは事実である。これらの交流はその周辺国、またそれを超えた世界中の人々のアイデンティティを形作ってきたともいえる。
同展の題名にある「13,700,000 km3」という数字は、地中海が抱え持つ水の量だ。3つの大陸を結ぶこの海水は、すべての地中海国にとって“共有物”であり、だからこそ良くも悪くもお互いに影響する。難民危機から海水汚染、生態系の変化、そして観光客たちがもたらす新たな文化、10組のアーティストが個々の切り口から人間が「地中海」とどのように絡み合ってきたのか、アートを通して考察していく。眩しい海と美しいリゾート。それだけじゃない、混沌としたギリシャの一面を覗くことができるまたとない機会だ。
